Maude Michaud is a Montréal-based filmmaker and photographer; she has been involved in various artistic activities – including music, theatre, dance, burlesque, and writing – for most of her life. Maude has been a fan of all things horrific and macabre since she was a kid, which resulted in a profound love of horror films and influenced her body of work. She pursued undergraduate and graduate studies in the department of Communication and Media Studies at Concordia University in Montréal where she specialized in Film Production.
PHOTOGRAPHY
She first dabbled in photography as part of an optional art class and was immediately hooked! She honed her craft by specializing in portrait, fashion photography, and band photos. After a short stint in commercial photography, she decided to focus only on projects with human subjects.
Inspired by film stills, Maude has developed a love for conceptual projects that test the limits of the storytelling potential of the photographic medium. She recently chose to focus on conceptual horror photography and is currently developing multiple photo series that serve as homage to different subgenres and to her own favorite classics. She also works as a set photographer for film.
FILM
When she turned 16, she produced, wrote, directed and acted in her first short film, Finding Hope, which was screened as part of the official selection of the International Teen Movie Festival in Toronto. The following year, she directed her first horror short, Spirits, which screened at the same festival.
Inspired by this successful foray into filmmaking, she founded her banner, Quirk Films, under which she independently wrote, directed and produced over 15 short films and video projects, both personal projects and commissioned works. Her films have toured the globe on the festival circuit and have gathered some critical acclaim.
Even though she is a huge horror fan, she explored a variety of genres in the films she directed, which resulted in an eclectic body of work including: horror dramas, slightly surreal quirky tales, and explorations of unconventional relationships.
She recently contributed to two horror anthology feature films, I Hate L.A. and Frankenstein Unlimited, by directing two short segments she wrote for the respective projects. She is also a horror activist and an active member of the Women in Horror movement; she created and directed the ongoing documentary web-series Bloody Breasts: An Exploration of Women, Feminism, and Horror Films. She also works as a director of photography and is currently in development for her first feature film.
